How to Update Snapchat When the Update Won't Show
Update Snapchat on iPhone, Android, or a Fire tablet using Snap's own store paths, then work out why the Update button is missing before you delete anything.

To update Snapchat on an iPhone, open the App Store, tap your photo or the account button at the top, and tap Update next to Snapchat under App Updates. On Android, open the Play Store, tap your profile icon, choose Manage apps & device, and tap Update next to Snapchat under Updates available. On a Fire tablet it's the Amazon Appstore, search for Snapchat, and tap Update. Those three paths are the ones Snap's own install and update page gives.
If there's no Update button, you're either already current or the phone can't run the newer version. The second case is more common than it looks, because Snapchat's App Store listing asked for iOS 15.0 on the day I checked while Snap's support page still says iOS 14.0. The store listing is the one your phone is measured against.
Everything below is for the missing button, in the order I'd check.
Update Snapchat on iPhone or iPad
Apple's manual update page and Snap's page describe the same route, with slightly different labels for the button at the top.
- Open the App Store.
- Tap your photo, or the My Account button, at the top of the screen.
- Scroll to App Updates. Snap's page mentions release notes here too, which tell you what changed.
- Tap Update next to Snapchat, or Update All if you're happy to take everything.
Apple's page also says App Store apps update automatically by default, so most iPhones never need step 4. That's normal. The switch is in Settings, Apps, App Store, then App Updates. If Snapchat has been sitting on an old version for weeks, that switch is the first thing I'd look at, before assuming anything is broken. The iPhone app update guide covers the switch on older iOS versions, where the App Store entry sits directly in the Settings list.
Update Snapchat on Android or a Fire Tablet
Snap doesn't publish its own Play Store steps. Its page hands Android users to Google's troubleshooter, the Play community, or the phone maker. Google's update page is the source for the path.
- Open the Play Store.
- Tap the profile icon at the top right.
- Tap Manage apps & device.
- Under Updates available, tap See details.
- Tap Update next to Snapchat.
Google adds two notes that explain a lot of "it updated but nothing changed" complaints. Some updates ask for new permissions and wait for you to accept them, and some need the phone restarted before they finish. A Samsung phone follows the same Play Store route for Snapchat; the Android app update guide covers the Galaxy Store case for apps Samsung supplied itself.
On a Fire tablet there's no Play Store, and Snap's page is explicit that the Amazon Appstore is the route. Open it, search for Snapchat, and tap Install or Update.
For an Android phone without Google services at all, Snap's supported devices page links its own download. That's the only place I'd take an Android install file from. A search for "Snapchat APK" turns up sites that repackage the app, and I wouldn't type my login into a copy of Snapchat that Snap didn't build. The store, or Snap's own page, and nothing else.
Why the Update Button Won't Show
The table is ordered by how little each check changes on the phone, with the ones I'd look at first at the top. Start there.
| What you see | Most likely reason | The check |
|---|---|---|
| The Snapchat listing shows Open, nothing under updates | You already have the newest version the store offers this device | Google's page says the Update button appears on the app's Details page only when an update exists; the same is true in the App Store |
| No update has appeared for months and the phone is a few years old | The phone's OS is below the store's minimum for the current Snapchat | Compare your OS version with the minimum table below |
| Android, updates never happen on their own | A Google account on the phone has a sign-in error, which Google says stops automatic updates | Open the Play Store, fix any account prompt, then try the manual route |
| Android, the update starts and stalls | Storage or connection | Settings, Storage; Google flags less than 1 GB free as the problem level |
| iPhone, a message about billing or verification | The App Store wants a valid payment method, even for a free app | Apple's can't-update page; fix it in the App Store, never through a link in a message |
| iPhone, the icon says Waiting or the ring never moves | Several downloads queued | Touch and hold the Snapchat icon and choose Prioritize Download |
| Fire tablet, the Play Store steps don't exist | Wrong store | Amazon Appstore |
Two of those deserve more than a table row.
The version floor. Snap's supported devices page says Android 5.0 or newer and iOS 14.0 or higher. The App Store listing said "Requires iOS 15.0 and watchOS 9.0 or later" when I fetched it, with iPadOS 15.0 for iPad. Both numbers are Snap's, and they don't agree, so I'd trust the store listing on the day you read it. If your iPhone is on iOS 14, the App Store will show the version you already have and nothing newer, with no message explaining why. On Android, Google's download troubleshooting page puts the system update under Settings, System, Software update, and that's where to see whether a newer Android is on offer. On iPhone it's Settings, General, Software Update.
| Source | iPhone and iPad | Android | Fire tablet |
|---|---|---|---|
| Snap's supported devices page | iOS 14.0 or higher | Android 5.0 or newer | Fire OS 5 or later |
| Store listing, fetched 2026-09-15 | iOS 15.0, iPadOS 15.0 | Not shown on the Play listing I could load | Not checked |
A phone that can't take a newer OS can't take a newer Snapchat past that floor, and no store trick changes that. The honest options are to keep using the version you have until Snap stops supporting it, or to change the phone. Nothing in between exists.
Storage. A Snapchat update is a large download, the App Store listing showed 403.9 MB on the fetch date, and Google's threshold for trouble on Android is less than 1 GB free, which on a phone already full of video is not much headroom at all. Check it before anything else. The phone storage guide has the measured way to clear room without deleting photos in a panic. Don't delete Snapchat itself to make space for its own update; that's the last resort on this page, not a storage fix.
How to Tell Which Version You Have
Nobody in the top results answers this cleanly, and Snap's help pages don't either, so here's the honest route. Open the Snapchat listing in the App Store or Play Store. If the button says Update, you're behind. If it says Open, you have the newest version that store will give this device. The App Store listing also has a Version History section showing the latest build and how many days ago it shipped, which is the closest thing to a public changelog. The listing showed a build from five days earlier when I looked, and the Play listing said updated on September 9, 2026, so the number moves quickly.
I wouldn't try to memorise a version number. It's stale by the following week, and the only comparison that matters is between your installed copy and the one the store is offering this phone today.
"Update Snapchat to See This Message"
This one confuses people because the app appears to be blaming a phone that's already current. Snap's Snaps won't send page says to update Snapchat on both your device and the recipient's. Snap doesn't spell out the mechanism, but the likely one is that a chat feature added in a new version can't be shown by an older one, so the older side gets the prompt. If your store shows Open, the person who needs to update is the other one.
The Reddit thread ranking for this search is someone on the latest version who still saw the prompt. Snap's own advice for a feature that misbehaves after an update, on its not working page, is to close the app fully and reopen it, restart the phone, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, and if it persists, report it from Settings, Support and Safety, Bugs and Suggestions, Report a Bug. The report route matters more than it sounds. Reinstalling won't fix a bug that only Snap can fix.
After the Update, in Order
If Snapchat updated and still misbehaves, Snap's pages give a sequence, and I'd keep to it because each step is reversible and each one changes a little more than the last. Don't skip ahead.
- Restart the app. Close it completely and open it again.
- Restart the phone. Snap's Snaps page says a full minute off, then on.
- Clear the cache. Snap's cache page puts it under your profile, the gear icon, App & Privacy, My Privacy & Data, then Clear Cache under Manage My Data on iOS, or Clear Data then Clear Cache on Android. Snap says clearing the cache won't delete Memories, Snaps, or Chats. One warning about the path itself. Snap's other troubleshooting page gives a shorter route straight from Settings to Clear Data, which looks like an older layout, so if the menu you see matches neither, look for the words Clear Cache rather than the exact position.
- Switch networks. Wi-Fi to mobile data or back. If that fixes it, Snap's advice is to talk to your provider, because the app was never the problem.
- Delete and reinstall. Last, because it changes the most. You'll sign in again afterwards, so make sure you can, with the password and access to the phone number or email on the account, before you delete anything. I'd also open Memories first and look at what's there, because a reinstall is the moment people discover what wasn't saved.
Snap's login error page lists the same four moves, update, connection, close and reopen, clear cache, for its unknown error code and for any error it doesn't list. So an update prompt at login is Snap's generic first step, not a sign the app is at the wrong version.
If the phone is jailbroken, Snap's jailbreak page says the app may fail even when it's the official copy, and Snap doesn't support any of the workarounds people trade. Updating won't change that.
Questions Google Attaches to This Search
How do I download the latest version of Snapchat? From the store on your device, using the steps at the top. Snap's supported devices page has the only other legitimate download, for Android phones without Google services.
How can I update my Snapchat account? Accounts don't have versions. If you mean the details on the account, they live in the app under your profile and the gear icon. If you mean the app, it's the store.
What is the newest Snapchat update? Whatever the store listing's Version History shows today. Snap ships often enough that any number I put here would be wrong by the time you read it.
How do I update Snapchat on iOS? App Store, your photo at the top, App Updates, Update next to Snapchat.
How do I get my Snapchat to update? Work down the table above, which covers the OS floor, a Play Store account error, storage, and the App Store payment prompt, in the order I'd check them.
How do I know if I have the latest version of Snapchat? The store button. Open means current, Update means not.
Snapchat+ Is Not an Update
One related search asks how to update Snapchat Plus. Snapchat+ is a paid subscription with extra features, per Snap's Snapchat+ page, and it rides on the same app. Updating the app doesn't buy it, and subscribing doesn't change your version. If a Snapchat+ feature is missing, update the app first, then look at the subscription.
The Short Version
App Store, Play Store, or Amazon Appstore, then the Update button. No button means you're current or the phone is below the store's minimum, and the App Store's floor was iOS 15.0 on the fetch date whatever Snap's help page says. Fix account and payment prompts inside the store, clear a gigabyte if storage is tight, restart once, clear Snap's cache, and reinstall only when you know you can sign back in. The same order works for updating Messenger and most other apps; the floor is what differs.
