Epson Printer Not Printing? Read the Nozzle Check

Fix an Epson printer that is not printing by reading its nozzle check, separating tank and cartridge problems, and respecting cleaning limits.

When an Epson printer feeds paper but does not print correctly, the nozzle check is the most useful piece of paper in the room. It shows whether ink reaches each printed line without asking Windows, macOS, a PDF reader, or Wi-Fi to cooperate.

That does not mean every Epson problem needs head cleaning. If the job is still trapped on the computer or the printer is offline, ink maintenance is the wrong branch. Use the short triage below, then let an internal Epson pattern decide what happens next.

First Separate “No Job” From “Bad Page”

Read the Epson display or status lights and resolve any exact error through the support page for your model. Then send one plain black-text page while watching the queue.

This article begins where Epson becomes distinctive, with the internal nozzle pattern and the maintenance decisions it supports.

Use plain paper and the exact control-panel or utility route documented for the model. Epson's current model manuals commonly place the function under Maintenance, but names and controls vary. Search the model on Epson support rather than following a button sequence from another printer.

Epson's manual for the ET-3930, ET-3950, and L6370, for example, uses Maintenance > Print Head Nozzle Check. It tells the reader to make sure the LCD has no error, load plain paper, print the pattern, and inspect the lines. That model-specific nozzle procedure is a good demonstration of the decision, not a universal menu map for every Epson.

Label the sheet with the time. Do not clean first and then try to remember how bad it was. The uncleaned pattern is your baseline.

Let the Pattern Choose the Maintenance Level

A clean pattern has continuous lines in the expected colors. Gaps, faint sections, or whole missing color blocks carry different weight.

  • No gaps: the nozzle test does not support another cleaning. Test the original document, app, paper setting, and driver output.
  • A few gaps or faint lines: follow the model's ordinary cleaning instruction, then print another nozzle check.
  • Most or all lines missing: some Epson models direct the reader to a stronger Power Cleaning or Power Ink Flushing procedure.
  • No meaningful improvement: stop repeating the same action and check the model's waiting period or support boundary.

Never turn off the printer or open the scanner unit during a cleaning cycle when the manual warns against it. A maintenance operation needs to finish normally before its result means anything.

I would place each new nozzle check beside the previous one. Improvement should be visible, not assumed. If the sheets are effectively identical, another immediate cycle is not new diagnosis.

Ordinary Cleaning and Power Cleaning Are Not Interchangeable

Power Cleaning uses more ink than a routine head cleaning. It is a recovery procedure, not a stronger button to press whenever a photo looks dull.

Epson's printer-problems support page discusses Power Cleaning after the documented head-cleaning and ink-refill checks. It also notes that the printer may need to be turned off and left for at least 12 hours before another Power Cleaning. The ET-3930-family manual is even more specific for those listed products. After three cleanings or one Power Cleaning without recovery, turn the printer off and wait at least 12 hours before testing again. If quality still does not improve after the documented next steps, contact Epson support. Use your model's limit, not those numbers by analogy. A different Epson family can have a different ink system, menu, maintenance box, and recovery sequence. One principle remains useful even when the count changes. Stronger cleaning consumes more ink and needs a documented stop point.

EcoTank and Cartridge Epson Printers Need Different Questions

An EcoTank window shows visible ink in a reservoir, but the nozzle check still decides whether printed output reaches the page. Use the exact model's setup and transport instructions for every other tank, cap, vent, and charging question.

If the trouble began after first setup, a refill, or transport, record that timing. Follow the model's setup or transport instructions in order. Do not tilt a tank printer casually, add an unapproved fluid, or invent a syringe repair from a video. An ink leak is a stop condition.

A cartridge Epson has a different set of observable questions. Did the problem begin immediately after one cartridge changed? Does the printer recognize it? Was protective material removed exactly as instructed? Is the cartridge intended for that model and region? Do not force a cartridge or treat an estimated level as proof of flow.

For both families, the nozzle check remains the useful output test. The supply display tells you what the printer believes is installed. The printed pattern tells you what reached paper.

The Maintenance Box Changes the Cleaning Decision

Some Epson printers collect surplus ink from cleaning in a replaceable maintenance box. Epson's support material explains that the box stores ink flushed during print-head cleaning and must be replaced when the LCD says it is at the end of its service life.

This matters because Epson identifies the maintenance box as the destination for surplus ink flushed during cleaning. A full maintenance-box message is not solved by another cleaning. Follow the LCD and exact model manual rather than resetting, opening, or improvising around the component.

Record the message verbatim. “Service required,” a maintenance-box notice, and a visible nozzle gap are three different facts, even if all appear after the same afternoon of troubleshooting.

A Blank Internal Pattern Is Different From a Blank PDF

If Epson's own nozzle check is blank, the computer did not create that result. Stay with model-specific ink setup, delivery, cleaning, or service guidance.

If the nozzle check is clean but one computer document prints blank, leave the maintenance menu alone. Print a simple black sentence from a trusted text editor with ordinary Letter or A4 paper selected. Then check the original file's preview, page range, paper size, scaling, visible layers, and color choices.

A PDF with white text, an object outside the page boundary, an empty selected range, or an unavailable specialty-paper setting can produce a useless sheet from a healthy Epson. A second trusted application is a much cheaper test than a Power Cleaning.

If simple documents from two applications fail while the nozzle check stays clean, the driver or computer output path becomes more plausible. Only then would I consider a reinstall through Epson's official model page or the operating system's trusted route.

Paper Can Distort the Evidence

Use a small stack of ordinary supported paper for diagnosis. Damp sheets, curled edges, specialty coatings, the wrong printable side, or a paper setting that does not match the loaded media can create feed and quality symptoms on top of the original problem.

Load the stack inside the guides without bowing it. If the printer cannot feed an ordinary internal test, solve the paper path first. No paper movement means there is no nozzle pattern to interpret yet.

Do not force a sheet that resists or reach beyond normal jam access. Stop for grinding, leaking ink, damaged power parts, smoke, or heat.

Two Worked Epson Cases

In the first case, the Epson says Ready, a computer job leaves the queue, paper feeds, and the sheet is completely blank. The nozzle check is blank too. I would photograph or retain that internal sheet, verify the exact model and recent supply history, and follow that model's tank or cartridge recovery path. I would not reinstall the computer software because the printer reproduced the problem without it.

In the second case, the nozzle check is clean, a plain text page prints, but one borderless photo has missing content and the wrong crop. The printer has already passed ink delivery and ordinary output. I would inspect the photo app's paper size, borderless support, scaling, orientation, and preview. Cleaning would spend ink without addressing the evidence.

Now consider a third clue. The job never leaves a Windows queue and the Epson remains silent. That is not yet a nozzle problem at all. Cancel one failed job, verify the selected Epson instance, and repair the USB or Wi-Fi path through the general guide.

Know When to Stop Cleaning

Stop and move to official Epson support when the model's documented cleaning count or waiting period is exhausted, the pattern does not improve, the printer reports a service or maintenance-box condition, ink leaks, an inaccessible jam remains, or the mechanism makes an abnormal sound.

I use the paper trail as my stop rule. If I have the first nozzle check, the exact maintenance action, the elapsed wait required by the model, and a second pattern with no meaningful improvement, I do not describe another immediate cleaning as persistence or progress, because I would only be moving more ink while erasing the clean comparison that support needs to decide whether setup, supply delivery, the maintenance system, or service is the next justified branch. I stop there. I keep both sheets.

Before contacting support, collect the model and serial details, operating system, connection type, exact display message, supply event, first nozzle check, each maintenance action, elapsed waiting time, and final nozzle check. Do not send network passwords or private document names.

That record lets support see a progression instead of hearing “I cleaned it a lot.” It also protects you from repeating an expensive maintenance step that already failed.

The best Epson repair is not the longest ritual. Print a baseline nozzle check, read what is missing, apply only the maintenance level the exact model calls for, and demand a visibly better pattern before continuing. When the pattern is clean, return to documents and settings. When it stays broken, respect the stop line.
