How to AirDrop Photos and Files Without Failures

To AirDrop a photo or file, open it, tap Share, choose AirDrop, then select the nearby Apple device or person. The recipient accepts the transfer. Both devices need Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on, they must be nearby, and Personal Hotspot should be disconnected.

Before You Send Anything

The Newer AirDrop Code Flow

Apple's May 2026 guidance says that when both devices use iOS 26.2 or later, sharing with somebody outside the contacts can prompt for an AirDrop code. The recipient taps Get AirDrop Code and tells that code to the sender, who enters it on the sending device.

That code temporarily adds the person for AirDrop purposes. Apple says the temporary relationship lasts 30 days unless it is removed sooner in Contacts. This is different from publishing a permanent discoverable setting.

Do not send the code to an unrelated person or enter one from an unexpected message. It should be exchanged with the person physically involved in the nearby transfer. If only one device shows the code flow, compare the operating-system versions and follow the prompts on the current devices rather than a screenshot from an older tutorial.

How to Receive an AirDrop

Keep the receiving device unlocked and watch for the preview or acceptance prompt. Check the sender's name and the item before tapping Accept.

Check the destination after acceptance.

• Photos normally open or save through Photos.

• Website links may open in the browser.
• App-specific content may return to the app that understands it.

Several nearby Apple devices can appear. Match the person's visible device and expected name. Do not choose the first icon merely because it arrived first.

Restart Once

If the settings are correct but neither device discovers the other, restart both normally and repeat one small transfer. A restart is a controlled state reset. Repeating it five times without a changed result is not diagnosis.

Why AirDrop Says Waiting or Fails

Waiting can mean the sender has chosen a target but the recipient has not completed acceptance or discovery. Watch both screens. If no prompt appears, cancel the attempt, recheck reception, and send one item again.
